Halligan Coffee Lofts
A History
The Halligan Coffee Lofts is a part of the Crescent Warehouse Historic District, a neighborhood that reflects the era when Davenport became a regional powerhouse for food manufacturing and distribution. The building entered the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
HALLIGAN COFFEE STARTS RETAIL OPERATIONS
Milton Glaspell and Thomas Halligan, an Irish immigrant, begin a coffee retail business, Glaspell & Halligan. Other Halligan family members start their entrepreneurial journey in other industries as well.
HALLIGAN TRANSITIONS TO WHOLESALE TRADE OPERATIONS
G.J. Washburn replaces Milton Glaspell. The company becomes Washburn-Halligan Co. It focuses on Wholesale trade specializing in roasting coffee and milling spices.
COMPANY BUILDS AND MOVES INTO 402 EAST 4TH STREET
After G.J.s retirement, the company renames itself Halligan Coffee Co. and moves into a new 60,000 sq ft. warehouse and mill annex.
A newspaper article in the early 1900s quoted a humorous local story that a person could “wake up with Thomas Halligan's coffee, keep warm with John Halligan's coal, and be laid to rest by Jim Halligan's funeral home”.
HALLIGAN COFFEE PEAKS WITH 55 TRAVELING SALESMEN
Thomas Halligan retires in 1918, and other family members join the business. They expand their trade into candy and across lowa, Illinois, Minnesota, and The Dakotas.
HALLIGAN COFFEE DISCONTINUES BUSINESS
Competition with national brands in the 1930s and 1940s leads to the decline of the business before it shuts down in 1952. Portions of the building are rented out to other tenants.
The Halligan Coffee Company Building is an example of a Classical Revival Style commercial block. A process of elimination and a study of other local architects practicing during the period suggests that the Davenport firm of Temple, Burrows and McLane likely designed it.
Y&J PROPERTIES RE-DEVELOPS BUILDING FOR MULTI-FAMILY USE
Y&J Properties re-develops the Halligan Coffee building and opens in 2015. The Halligan Coffee Lofts boasts 45 residential apartments with a fitness center and community room. Many apartments and spaces retain elements from the building's coffee wholesale days.
